MESSAGE FROM THE MANUFACTURER: Did you know Genetically Engineered crops (also known as Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs) FEED THE WORLD? Did you know GMOs lower pesticide use? Did you know GE crops are no different than organic crops? Did you know that the toxic, carcinogenic pesticides used on GE crops are actually non-toxic when consumed in small amounts? Forget about the independent science studies showing the exact opposite of what we’re marketing to you. Monsanto says our talking points are true. They’ve done their own studies. We haven’t seen those studies because they’re top secret. But who’s to argue with Monsanto? AREN’T QR CODES GRRREAT?! We can lead you to any website we want and tell you whatever we want to tell you.
By the way, here’s the fine print you were probably looking for: PRODUCED WITH GENETIC ENGINEERING. But maybe it isn’t? We don’t really have to tell you – there are no fines for nondisclosure, so we can tell you whatever we want or nothing at all. Now that you’ve spent 5 minutes wasting your time, go ahead, scan the next product. We can do this all day!!
The QR Code scheme is a mockery of what over 90% of Americans demand. 64 countries around the world mandate GMO labeling. The USA needs to do the same. Take action: Tell President Obama to VETO the DARK Act bill: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/veto-dark-act-s764
ABOUT THE DARK ACT (Deny Americans the Right to Know): The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is trying to preempt States’ Rights to enact mandatory GMO labeling laws. The DARK Act would not only outlaw States from pursuing mandatory GMO labeling, but the bill would also overturn mandatory GMO labeling laws already passed in Vermont, Connecticut and Maine.
Instead of simply printing, “Produced with genetic engineering,” on the label of the package, the GMA and their member allies such as Monsanto, Kellogg’s and Nestle, intend on putting forth a costly QR Code scheme in place that will erect a barrier for consumers to find out if there are GMOs in their food or not. This is after claiming for years that printing a handful of words on the package would raise food prices.
As The Hill reported, “…the SmartLabel initiative, which will allow consumers to find detailed product information by scanning a QR code on a food package, using a web search such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, or visiting the company’s website. Each individual product that participates in SmartLabel will have a specific landing page that contains detailed information about the product that’s set up by the manufacturer. GMA said all of these SmartLabel landing pages will be organized in a similar format with a consistent look across products.”
The GMA and their GMO allies fear that the words, “genetic engineering,” on the package will scare consumers away from buying that product, so they’ve concocted this “SmartLabel” QR code scheme as a way of leading consumers to websites where they can further indoctrinate and brainwash uneducated consumers into thinking GMOs are good for health and the environment. GMOs are definitely not good as evidenced by our compilation of over 2,000 scientific references found HERE.
Despite the desire and demand from the vast majority of Americans for mandatory, on-package, clearly worded GMO labeling, most of our Representatives and Senators in Congress are still bowing to the GMA and Monsanto. This must stop.
