GMO Free USA seeks to change our broken food system and polluted agricultural system through research, education, and uncompromising advocacy and activism. We seek to encourage and inspire individuals to change and in turn to help others do the same. We seek to bring these individuals together into an ever-growing community that demands food transparency and food justice for all.
Building an activist community and creating effective communications are the cornerstones of GMO Free USA. Diana began our Boycott Kellogg’s GMOs campaign by starting a closed Facebook Group for private discussions and as a launch pad for the boycott. From there the team focused on building a Facebook Page for public communications. The Group has become one of the largest on FB, and likewise, the Page has organically grown into one of the largest and most engaged sites for GMO-free information and activism on FB, with over a half million followers. Our success on Facebook has allowed us to rapidly educate and expand the movement.
We focus on boycotts because our society is economically driven. Each of us can make an impact by speaking with our wallet. Since the inception of our Boycott Kellogg’s GMOs campaign in the fall of 2012, Kellogg’s has seen six consecutive quarters of declining internal net sales across all business segments. As we educate consumers and drive them away from out-of-touch corporations like Kellogg’s, we create opportunity for both established and fledgling small businesses that are producing organic and non-GMO products. We believe everyone, irrespective of income level, should have access to clean food. By broadening this market and affecting supply and demand, we help lower the costs of organic and non-GMO foods.
GMO Free USA has been actively involved in creating awareness for state and local ballot initiatives and legislative efforts to label GMOs and limit GMO crop cultivation. We supported and saw victories in:
- 2013 Kauai County, Hawaii: Bill 2491 for GMO and pesticide regulation
- 2013 Hawaii County, Hawaii: Bill 79 for GMO crop prohibition
- 2014 Jackson County, Oregon: Measure 15-119 for GMO crop ban
- 2014 Josephine County, Oregon: Measure 17-58 for GMO crop ban
- 2014 Humboldt County, California: Measure P for GMO crop ban
- 2014 Maui County, Hawaii: GMO crop moratorium
We measure short-term success in several ways.
- Exponential growth in public awareness & rejection of GMOs and synthetic pesticides
- Increased interest in self-reliance activities such as food gardening
- Increased public involvement in the political process
In the long-term, GMO Free USA is changing the industry-propagated mindset to a paradigm based on the Precautionary Principle.
